Dr. Curren received his B.S. (Biology) from Purdue University
in 1968, followed by an M.S. from Ohio University and
a Ph.D. form the Institute of Microbiolgy at Rutgers University
in 1975. His post-doctoral work (human cell mutagenesis
and DNA repair) was conducted at the Michigan Cancer Foundation
and Michigan State University.
Dr. Curren joined Microbiological Associates in 1976,
became Director of Genetic Toxicology Division in 1988
and was later appointed Vice President of Research Program
Development. In 1989, he founded an in vitro Toxicology
Division, which is now incorporated as a non-profit
Institute.
Dr. Curren serves on many national and international
committees focused on the development, validation, and
practical use of alternative methods to whole animal
testing. He has been a member of the CTFA’s Animal
Welfare Task Force, the Validation Committee of the
Center for Alternatives to animal Testing (CAAT), the
Interagency Regulatory Alternatives Group (IRAG) Expert
Committee, the British Home Office / EC validation planning
committee, the ECVAM Pre-validation of Alternative Methods)
in vitro corrosivity validation. He has been President
of the In Vitro Specialty Section of the Society of
Toxicology.
